According to a statement posted on the Claire’s company website, makeup recalls were initiated after FDA tests indicated that asbestos fibers may be present in certain products. These recalls were made over TWO YEARS AFTER THE COMPANY WAS INFORMED OF CONTAMINATION, leaving far too much time for more households and lives to be affected. Naturally this lead many to be concerned over their own makeup stashes. What is in my makeup? The answer is common for most- no idea. Unfortunately, the cosmetics industry does not have our best interests in mind, so we have to be aware of possible contaminants. To name a few- parabens, formaldehyde, fragrances, heavy metals, teflon, titanium dioxide, carbon black, and phthalates. All or some of these chemicals can also be found in household cleaners, are linked to cancer and/ or reproductive toxicity, and may disrupt normal bodily functions in many different ways. Cosmetics are not regulated by the FDA making it very easy to use harmful fillers as opposed to more natural and safe options. EEK! First step: research whatever brand you use, especially if you use it regularly! Second: Switch to brands that have a conscience! For example, Thrive Cosmetics, Pacifica, Juice Beauty, and Mineral Fusion are all vegan, cruelty-free, non-toxic, and natural!
