Alternative vs Complimentary Health
Explaining the difference.
Even though the terms “alternative” and “complimentary” are often grouped together (CAM) or seen as one and the same as far as medicine/health/wellness are concerned, there is an huge difference between them, and I‘d really like to clarify!
Both terms refer to treatments that may be used for any ailment or condition, from minor to very serious, that aren’t seen as common medical practice. From herbal tinctures, to chiropractic work, acupuncture, massage therapy, meditation, Reiki, and craniosacral healing methods (to only name a few), the list of modalities and treatments can go on for days. These methods are considered as “alternative” in nature. When practiced alongside traditional medicine, however, it is considered “complimentary” health.
The US is behind the curve, but making serious progress when it comes to the shift of more complimentary health practices. With the widespread recent acceptance and availability of more alternative health practices, it has actually become pretty common. More doctors are recommending alternative medicine in addition to their traditional practice. A significant overlap is occurring as people try to take more control of their health and happily experience more freedom as a result (think less doctors visits!).
We can see this shift everywhere. More yoga studios are popping up in neighborhoods. The availability of organic food is heavily increasing. Spas are frequented on the regular. People all over the country are visiting salt caves to address real health issues. Massage is being used to reduce stress and alleviate chronic pain. A great deal of people are either trying to avoid taking medication or attempting to reduce the need for it. It’s all about having options, and it seems as though we suddenly have MUCH more. Take advantage!
